There’ll be another chapter in the story of crime solver Dr. Lazlo Kreizler: TNT has ordered The Angel of Darkness, a limited series that’s a continuation of The Alienist, with that show’s lead cast all set to return.
Stars Daniel Brühl (Dr. Lazlo Kreizler), Luke Evans (John Moore) and Dakota Fanning (Sara Howard) will reprise their roles in The Angel of Darkness, which is based on the follow-up novel by The Alienist author Caleb Carr. Set in New York City’s Gilded Age, The Alienist starred Brühl as a criminal psychologist, or “alienist,” on the trail of a ritualistic killer murdering young boys. The ten-episode limited series debuted in January to strong ratings and earned six Emmy nominations, including one for Outstanding Limited Series.
“We could not be prouder of The Alienist‘s outstanding, award-worthy performance, and all of the work the incredible actors and crew put in to bring that story and time period to life,” TNT executive vice president of original programming Sarah Aubrey said in a statement. “Our audience fell in love with these multi-dimensional, timeless characters and the journey of their struggles living in complicated times. With this new story in TNT’s Suspense Collection, we will further immerse viewers into their world as they are confronted with a new enemy.”
I’m surprised they went with a new title instead of calling it The Alienist season 2 or The Alienist: The Angel of Darkness. Was there something legally preventing that?
It’s probably because of the first season’s Emmy nomination in the category of “Outstanding Limited Series”. This way, they can still claim it was a limited series, and the second season is just another limited series, with the same cast in the same roles. Otherwise, someone might say it cheated its way into that category.
Like HBO LIttle Big Lies
Theoretically couldn’t they do this with Shadowhunters? They said it couldn’t continue in it’s current form, so instead of it being Shadowhunters: TMI, they could do another version like Heavenly Fire or Lost Souls
Wasn´t the problem with Shadowhunters that it got to expensive for Freeform after the Netflix deal fell appart? I doubt that a title change would do anything about that…
Yes! I will shallowly admit that I only watched this for yummy Luke Evans, but I ended up enjoying it.
These “limited” series’ are really starting to become a joke. I can understand Big Little Lies because it was one book only, and it was doubtful such a prestige cast would come back for more, but the Alienist had a sequel novel and, yes, its actors are fairly big names but it was obvious they would come back for more if it’s ratings were good. Total bs just so they could get nominations.
I agree.
American Horror Story is an egregious example
American Horror Story is an anthology.
“These “limited” series’ are really starting to become a joke. ”
It is not a joke. You obviously mixed up the category with miniseries. Limited series usually are ongoing.
It was said from the start that if The Alienist did well enough, they would want to do the sequel. BTW limited series tends to mean less episodes, not that it would be 1 season.
Looking forward to the second season of “The Alienist.” Loved the first season. What this mystery going to be about?
I read the 2nd novel after season 1 and it’s a great story set a year later about them being pulled into the case of a woman who is kidnapping children to raise as her own but they end up dying, and she’s killed her husbands too. Big difference is the lady knows they are after her and starts trying to kill them before they can get to her. So much happens with the characters too and they become more like family, and I’m very excited to see how they adapt this. Also, a 3rd book is coming out next year too so they could do another after this.
I was hoping there, would be a sequel. Excellent news!
Excellent news.
Awesome! This and The Terror were my two must sees last year.
The cast is outstanding and so was their wonderful acting of difficult, deeply emotionally scarred people.
I only care if Brian Geraghty returns as Teddy Roosevelt. Clarify, please!
Please tell me this wasn’t the blind item from the other day…
Great News! Loved the Alienist!
So Happy. Love this show and so well done.
YES!
Loved the first season and psyched for the cast to return!
I just finished watching the entire show and it was fantastic!!
So glad to hear there will be more on the way. I hope the Detective Sargeants come back as well.
It took me a while to realize that “Roosevelt” in the beginning was THE Teddy Roosevelt!!
Both books were incredible reading. The Alienist show was very well done and got more intriguing as it went. “The Angel of Darkness” was a fabulous sequel. Even better than the “Alienist” with the orphan telling the story and him being somewhat of a central character. I hope the sequel can capture the way the youth were treated and depicted in the book. The characters are addicting and I’m hoping they “open up” more in th AoD. Can’t wait
