Everybody do the Raincoat Shuffle: Fox on Monday renewed its Emmy-winning reality competition So You Think You Can Dance for Season 16.
Slated to debut this summer, Season 16 will feature contestants from ages 18 to 30, with auditions taking place in New York on Feb. 9, Dallas on Feb. 12 and Los Angeles on Feb. 23. (More audition information can be found here.)
“Each season, the talent on So You Think You Can Dance reaches new levels and continues to create the most incredible routines,” said Rob Wade, president of alternative entertainment and specials at Fox. “The hard work and passion that goes into each performance is awe-inspiring. We can’t wait to see what Season 16 has in store and look forward to bringing you a new crop of incredible, inspired and inspiring dancers.”
Added executive producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe: “I am thrilled that we have been picked up by Fox for Season 16 of So You Think You Can Dance. This allows us to shine the spotlight once again on the incredible choreographic and dance talent across the United States as we search for America’s favorite dancer.”
Eighteen-year-old dancer Hannahlei Cabanilla is the reigning SYTYCD champ, who bested fellow finalists Jensen Arnold, Genessy Castillo and Slavik Pustovoytov in September’s Season 15 finale. Cabanilla can next be seen in Fox’s live production of Rent, airing Sunday, Jan. 27 at 8/7c.
There’s no word yet on whether Mary Murphy, Vanessa Hudgens or Stephen “Twitch” Boss — all of whom joined Lythgoe on the Season 15 judging panel — will be back for the 16th cycle.
Our 2019 Renewal Scorecard has been updated with Dance‘s pickup. Are you (ahem) jazzed to hear it will be back?
I’m (morbidly) curious what is going to be the “fun twist” of S16, then >.>
Hooray! Hopefully less audition episodes and more competition episodes. Last season seemed very abbreviated.
Couldn’t agree more!
I completely agree! We barely spend any time on the actual competition any more! I wonder if it’s another cost saving measure. Now that they no longer go to Vegas for the final audition rounds, I have a feeling the performance episodes cost more to produce than the audition ones.
They just need more episodes for the show so they can properly cover both.
I’m thrilled! Can’t wait!
I hope Sonya Tayeh can choreograph at least one routine in Season 16. Really missed her genius last seasson
I second that. She’s one of my favorites.
YES YES YES!!!!! Hands down, one of THE BEST choreographers on the show!!
I really hope they go back the format two seasons ago, where the judges had less say than the All-Stars in choosing the finalists. Made for a much more interesting group of dancers, and we got to see a lot of the All-Stars!
hated that format where the all-stars chose
I adore SYTYCD! I agree though about the auditions and the competiion. We need the time to see these talents grow and excel in all areas of dance. Watching them grow is the best part of the show. For example, seeing a hiphop dancer learn to do a quick step is amazing. That is what the show is about. Give us more of that, please.
I’d like to take that one step further. I go back to season one where the dancers who were chosen weren’t already good or better than good. That first season you truly saw the growth in the dancers and it was much more impressive than now in my opinion, but I watch it faithfully and enjoy it, but I loved when the All-Stars were much more involved in choosing the contestants
To be honest, I don’t know if finding unpolished talent is possible any more. I think they attempt to do that by keeping hip hop and tap dancers in the mix, but then there’s online backlash about people being kept over better dancers. They literally tell people in auditions to take more classes in a different style then come back the next year. I don’t know what they can do any more.
Excellent!!
Yea! My favorite reality show is coming back! Love “So You Think You Can Dance”!
Wish they could do the 2nd weekly episode – even if on Fox.com. It seems so disjointed to watch week 1, vote out people. Watch week 2, the have the people from week 1 voted out. Putting it online would be good for the younger crowd who watch things online anyways. And for those who don’t watch online, there can be a brief recap at the beginning of the episode. Just my 2 cents.
It would be REALLY great if they could get new judges who could give useful critiques. It would make the show a lot fresher. Vanessa Hudgens is a big zero, and adds nothing. It would be nice if Nigel would take himself off the panel, but that’s 100% unlikely because of his ego. Mary Murphy is okay. Some of the choreographers were good judges. Lex Ishimoto might be good because he’s familiar with most styles.
cannot stand VAnessa Hudgens, so annoying!!! her voice is like nails on a chalk board.I liked when they had favorite male and female dancer. the season should be longer and usually those they showcase in the auditions, is who makes it to the finals. Be better if they kept your curiosity up
Great news. It’s my summer staple. I hope they have a proper top 20 this year, though.
So glad SYTYCD is renewed!!!♥️
I am so thrilled! This is my favorite show & wait for it all year. I am 73 & so glad the network has chosen to renew this wonderful & refreshing program which all ages can enjoy. PLEASE return to the original format, do not cut the season short, have, the contestants dance with each other as well with as the pros, and PLEASE get rid of Vanessa as a judge. She appears to know little about dancing & parrots what the other judges say. My compliments & thanks to the network -SYTYCD is wonderful and beautiful family entertainment!
This is great news!! I agree about get rid of Vanessa but probably won’t happen.
Glad it’s being renewed! To make it better and have me wanting to tune in, please, please, please get rid of Vanessa H. She is a DUD with nothing to say expect: OMG you guys. Or I loved it. You were amazing. Blah blah. She has nothing of any value and I often turn it off because she is so annoying. Twitch was a good addition. Mary Murphy can be annoying when she yells but she is credible and adds value. I can handle her. Would love to have one if the choreographers as a judge. Or being back Christina Applegate. She was good! Literally ANYONE will be better than Vanessa. Please. Please.
lol I literally have to fast forward past her comments because they’re so vapid. OMG YOU GUYS THAT WAS… THAT WAS JUST… THAT WAS BE-YOO-TIFULLLLLLLLL. I sorta feel bad because she seems to have nice positive energy but her ‘critiques’ are beyond worthless.
SO HAPPY!!! MORE EPISODES, PLEASE.
So glad SYTYCD will be back. It is a breath of fresh air during summer of endless reruns.
So glad to hear this is renewed for2019! It is the BEST show onTV! Please keep it going!,,,
Love SYTYCD. Can’t wait for season 6. Totally agree less auditions and more competitive routines.
No Vanessa, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. Assume she brings tween audience to the table, otherwise, she brings absolutely nothing to the function of the show. She’s vapid, almost completely without knowledge, and has little or nothing to teach the contestants.
I am so thrilled that this competition has been renewed. I thought Fox was going to drop it and the entertainment industry would be immeasurably poorer if they didn’t renew this program. Just look at “Twitch” on the Ellen Show. He is such a talent and began on SYTYCD. He is just one of the people from that show now on Broadway or on star’s dance shows.
