Tim Metzger is an ACADEMY AWARD and EMMY nominated cinematographer and filmmaker with over 15 years of experience filming documentaries, commercials and fiction films.
Tim was honored to travel the world with Morgan Freeman as director of photography for the new event series The Story of God, premiering April 3rd 9/8c on National Geographic.
Also in 2015 Tim explored climate change grief with Bill Nye (also for Nat Geo), inspiring a wildly popular internet meme with his photo, and received his 2nd Emmy nomination, as DP of the Discovery/AHC docudrama series, Gunslingers. His first Emmy nomination was for the 2013 History special Lee Harvey Oswald: 48 Hours to Live (the first documentary to use the Freefly MōVI).
He served as director of photography on the Emmy-nominated 6-part series RISING: Rebuilding Ground Zero for Discovery/Dreamworks, chronicling years of construction and healing at the new World Trade Center, executive produced by Steven Spielberg.
Tim shot and produced the 2011 Academy Award nominee Sun Come Up, a documentary film about some of the world’s first climate refugees. Sun Come Up earned multiple awards on the festival circuit and screened theatrically across the U.S., including the IFC Center in New York and the Sundance Cinema in West Hollywood. It aired on HBO in 2011.
Over the past decade Tim has filmed in more than 20 countries and his work has appeared on HBO, PBS, National Geographic, Discovery, BBC, CNN and many more. Tim’s theatrical work includes Li Tong, a narrative feature set in Beijing, and the documentary Leh Wi Tok, following pioneers of independent radio in post-war Sierra Leone.
Additional career highlights include befriending giant tortoises in the Galapagos, hunting anacondas in Venezuela, and crossing the Siberian Arctic aboard a Russian nuclear icebreaker. Tim co-founded Red Antelope Films with Sun Come Up director/producer Jennifer Redfearn. Their latest collaboration is the award-winning feature documentary, Tocando la Luz, set in Havana, Cuba.
