Kayßler was born in Neurode, Silesia, Imperial Germany (now Nowa Ruda, Poland). He visited school in Breslau, where he became a close friend of Christian Morgenstern and Fritz Beblo. Kayßler studied Philosophy in Breslau and Munich and first appeared at Berlin, later working at several Theaters at Görlitz and Halle.
Kayßler became a member of Max Reinhardt's ensemble of the Deutsches Theater Berlin in 1905 and was the director of the Volksbühne Berlin in 1918 - 23. He first appeared in the silent movie Welche sterben, wenn sie lieben in 1913 and wrote several poems and dramas.
Kayßler was named as one of the Third Reich's most important artists in the Gottbegnadeten list of September 1944. He was murdered by Soviet troops at his house in Kleinmachnow, Germany, when he tried to protect his wife.
