Martyr of Gowanus

Brooklyn 2001. Gavin (29) is a housepainter who verbally confronts a teenager, Angel, who he believes has stolen his fishing rod. Later that night, Gavin is jumped by Angel's cousin, George. Days later, while chasing Angel, Gavin meets Mercedes (22), Angel's sister. Gavin asks her out. Before their date, Gavin invites Angel fishing and the two develop a friendship. Gavin's date with Mercedes ends badly when he tries to kiss her. A few days later Gavin's in a deli when he he hears an explosion. It's the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. Gavin is deeply affected and talks with Angel about how to respond. He considers an act of vengeance against a middle eastern store clerk. Angel meanwhile is spending time with George and a drug dealer, Melvin. One night Melvin kidnaps Angel because he believes the boy is stealing. Gavin rescues Angel but comes across a man assaulting a woman. Gavin intervenes but the man stabs him. Gavin bleeds out but receives aid from the store clerk
