The series traces the extraordinary life and career of Franz Beckenbauer, who would have celebrated his 80th birthday in 2025. Directed by Grimme Prize winner Torsten Körner, the film explores the Munich native's rise from the „Glasscherbenviertel“ Giesing into the world of football and beyond. From his beginnings at the 1966 World Cup to his global fame as a player, team manager and advertising icon, the documentary shows how Beckenbauer shaped football and especially FC Bayern Munich. The documentary illustrates not only his sporting achievements, such as winning the world championship title as a player and coach, but also his role as „luminous figure“ and pop star of the sport. Companions such as Uli Hoeneß,Jürgen Klinsmann and Günter Netzer recall shared experiences and underline the power of modernization that Beckenbauer and his generation exerted on football.
