Benjamin Rubin was born in Massachusetts and grew up in Rhode Island where he made short films and directed theater. He completed his undergraduate study at the University of California, Santa Cruz where he graduated with a double major in Film and Politics and was the executive producer for the student-run film production company Moxie Productions. In the summer of 2007 he worked in communications on the Presidential campaign of Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich.

After graduating from college, he worked for his former UCSC lecturer Brant Smith on the feature film "In-World War," and in the fall of 2010 entered the Creative Producing program at the Columbia University School of the Arts.
