Falling objects—bodies, furniture, houses, appear in much of Jolley’s work. He is interested in the moment between the downward descent and the impact of arrival, in the helplessness of the slide or free-fall, and the finality of the physical disintegration caused by impact. He sees the two aspects of falling as being ‘linked to a momentary dislocation’ interrupting the flow of life and forcing a change in our relationship with existence.
