He was born in Sokcho, South Korea. After graduation from the Dept. of Theatre & Film of Kyungsung University in Pusan, he went to Paris to study Cinema. He is a professor at Dept. of Theatre and Film of Kyungsung University in Pusan, port city located in the southern end of Korean peninsula, where he makes his films. In 1997, he directs his first feature film, Wind Echoing in my Being. The second one was The Bird who Stops in the Air (1999). With a Girl of Black Soil (2007) won two prizes in Competition of New Horizons Section in Venice.
