"A Change of Seasons" - "Dead Poets Society" e “Table for Five"
This song includes samples from the films "Dead Poets Society", “Table for Five”, and from the Robert Herrick poem, "To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time".
The "Carpe Diem" section includes samples from the 1989 movie "Dead Poets Society", and from the 1983 film Table For Five. According to Mike Portnoy, he thought the Dead Poets Society lines worked well in the song, but was more inspired by another Robin Williams movie, "The World According to Garp" (1982), which he describes as "dealing with the cycles of life."

"Honor Thy Father" - "Magnolia", "Ordinary People", "At Close Range" and "The Royal Tenenbaums"
Honor thy Father is the 4th track on Dream Theater's seventh studio album, Train of Thought, and is one of their heaviest songs in their discography. The instrumental section features samples from a variety of different films, most prominently Magnolia.
Dream Theater often works clips from movies into their songs; on "Honor Thy Father" there's a long rip of them starting at the 5:18 mark. Most of them - the parts about regret - come from the 1999 movie "Magnolia". Clips from "Ordinary People" (1980), "At Close Range" (1986), and "The Royal Tenenbaums" (2001) also appear.

"Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory" - "Dead Again"
Mike Portnoy cites the 1991 film Dead Again as a major inspiration for the storyline of the concept album. It stars Emma Thompson, Andy Garcia and Kenneth Branagh and tells the story of a woman suffering from amnesia and the private investigator who helps track down her identity. He finds out that a past life connection could endanger both of their lives. Sounds familiar…

"Pull Me Under" - "Hamlet"
According to the band, the song has Shakespearean themes, particularly in relation to Hamlet. It is not specifically about Hamlet, but shares themes with it and is inspired by it. The final line "Oh that this too, too solid flesh would melt" is taken from Hamlet.
And yes, it is meant to end like that.

"Take away my pain" - "Singing in the rain"
He said, "Look at poor Gene Kelly,
I guess he won't be singing in the rain."

"The Count of Tuscany" - "Hannibal"
The lyrics are anecdotal, recalling an event on the Train of Thought tour whereby Petrucci and his guitar technician were taken to visit an Italian Count's mansion. User dci1812 of the MP.com forums posted on August 16th 2009 that he believed he had worked out the identity of the Count:
"MYSTERY SOLVED!!!
The count is: Count Niccolò Capponi. He is a bearded, historian count who lives in the Tuscany area, and whose family is in the wine business.
He was a source of information for the Thomas Harris film "Hannibal", and is mentioned in the book. He also makes an appearance in the movie as one of the panel members for Dr. Fell's (Lecter's) selection as curator of the CAPPONI Library."

"Lost no Forgotten" - "Ben-Hur"
This song found Petrucci harping back to some of 1950s Hollywood's depictions of the ancient civilizations. Said Petrucci: "The mood of the song always reminded me of an old-time epic film like "Ben-Hur". So I wrote lyrics that are somewhat historical about this ancient Persian elite fighting force that kind of died out. Again, a good example of my love for storytelling and linking music to words."

"Pale Blue Dot" - "Cosmos, a personal Voyage"
The "pale blue dot" is the Earth. The phrase comes from a photograph taken in 1990 by the Voyager 1 space probe showing Planet Earth as a tiny speck. The astronomer Carl Sagan found the image quite profound, and in 1994 he published a book called Pale Blue Dot: A Vision Of The Human Future In Space where he discussed our place in the Universe.

The song was inspired by Sagan's work. Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci wrote the lyric, which deals with our responsibility to care for The Earth and also to treat each other kindly, as we're all on this little planet together.
Running 8:26, this opens with a soundscape that integrates audio from various space missions. It then launches into the trademark interplay between Petrucci's guitar, Mike Mangini's drums and Jordan Rudess' keyboards. James LaBrie doesn't come in with his vocal until 2:18.
Some of the lyrics, including the "spineless cowards, fearless warriors" line, come from Carl Sagan's writing. Sagan noted that "every hero and coward" inhabited Earth, making the point that all of human history is but the tiniest mote in the scope of the Universe.
This is a great example of Dream Theater's progressive metal sound. "When Dream Theater came on the scene, 'progressive metal' wasn't even a term," James LaBrie said in a Songfacts interview. "But because we incorporated the metal influence and the progressive, more technical aspects of music, that became a new thing, a new direction musically. It inspired a lot of other bands and still does today. So, when going into Distance Over Time, it was a conscious effort that we wanted to very much incorporate both those elements into this album."
John Petrucci told Billboard several things came together in his life that made him want to write about the Voyager mission and Carl Sagan's famous pale blue dot quote. He added: "It was very specifically about a certain reflection I was doing at that particular point."
"Cosmos, a personal Voyage" do Carl Sagan
