Thom começou sua carreira no início dos nos 80 como modelo e ator comercial, estrelando comerciais nacionais para Le Tigre Clothing, Sprite e Tostitos. Ganhou uma faixa preta em artes marciais. Seu primeiro grande papel foi como ‘Freddy’ no cult 'A Volta dos Mortos Vivos", que é seu filme favorito. Thom tem sido referido como o “Paul Newman de filmes de terror”. O ator já atuou em onze filmes de Albert Pyun.
Ele protagonizou "Sexta-Feira 13, Parte 6: Jason Vive" sendo o terceiro e último ator a interpretar Tommy Jarvis, foi muito elogiado pela crítica por sua atuação.
Aparentemente deixou a carreira de ator, agora é dono de uma empresa de construção civil.
