Mais conhecido por roteirizar o filme Evil Dead 2, junto de seu amigo, o diretor Sam Raimi, no qual estudaram juntos na Wylie E. Groves High School em Birmingham, Michigan.
Quando se mudou para Los Angeles continuou contribuindo com os trabalhos dos amigos diretores Sam Raimi, os irmãos Coen e o ator Bruce Campbell.
Mais tarde com a parceria do diretor Quentin Tarantino, dirigiu o cultuado Um Drink no Inferno 2, onde continuam amigos, produzindo juntos alguns filmes, como O Albergue.
